Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement
New Program
Engineering Technology, General (requires Trigonometry) (092400)
08/24/23
The Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement is for students who would like to design, create, prototype, and evaluate two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) drawings. This certificate allows students to gain skills in computer-aided drafting (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), architectural design, engineering, and modeling using real-world examples. Courses in this certificate combine educational theory and hands-on experience with CAD/CAM software and hardware.
Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to enter the engineering technician workforce or continue their educational pathway to a degree. They will also be qualified to take industry-recognized certification exams.
A total of 20 students are expected to enroll with the potential for annual growth. Completion rates of the Certificate of Achievement are expected to be five to ten per year with a potential for annual growth.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
Cabrillo College is seeking approval from the Chancellor’s Office for the new Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement in Career Education. The program is designed to train and educate students with the knowledge and skills to attain employment in a variety of related careers such as engineering technician, design drafting, manufacturing, electronics, and computer animation. The local and regional need for qualified applications to fill these positions has been advocated for by local industry professionals and supported by current, regional labor market research (TOP 0924.00). The Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement program is aligned with Cabrillo’s mission, master plan, and statewide community college work in Guided Pathways. Approval of this program will benefit regional and local employers, augment college enrollment, and support non-traditional and underserved minority students in a viable career and academic path. This program would give our students the knowledge and skills they need to enter the workforce or continue their studies in the field. The goal is for certificate completers to be gainfully employed within a year of program completion or to advance to an AS degree in Engineering Technology. Working with employers to identify earning potential is promising, with the potential for a starting salary of $15,000-$30,000/yr in jobs such as Architectural and Civil Drafters, Electrical and Electronics Drafters, and Mechanical Drafters. It is critical to give community college students the educational and professional experience that is necessary to be successful when they continue to higher degrees or certificates.
