Certificate of Achievement in Data Science Essentials

The Certificate of Achievement in Data Science Essentials (stackable to Data Science) prepares the student by providing the fundamental skills in very highly sought-after professional career pathway. This program gives students the exposure to develop skills in analyzing data for actionable insights. Some tasks may include identifying the data-analytics problems that offer the greatest opportunities for various organizations, by determining the correct data sets and variables. Students will be practicing with large amount of data using various tools provided such as those that are available as Python libraries.

This program familiarizes the student how to work with static and dynamic data, which most organization may have at their disposal. It is obvious that data can be useless unless it is analyzed to make sense of and make it applicable to the organization’s needs.

The Certificateof Achievement in Data Science Essentials program at West will be starting as Fall 2023.  The completion rates (75%) is consistent with other programs offered inthe Computer Science division.

Students who successfully complete the sequence of courses in the Certificate of Achievement in in Data Science Essentials will demonstrate the following Student Learning Outcomes:

 1.    Apply data science concepts and methods to solve problems in real-world contexts.

2.    Develop skills in analyzing data and to build data models.

3.    Use tools such as Jupyter notebooks for interactive data exploration and visualization.

4.    Demonstrate proficiency using Python programming & tools for data analysis.

The Certificate of Achievement in Data Science Essentials is planned in sequence. Satisfactory completion of all courses with a grade of “C” or better in a given semester is required before the student can continue to the second semester. There may be some pre-requisite for some of these courses.

The Chancellor’s Office Curriculum Inventory System (COCI) was searched and similar degree and/or certificate programs were located in the Los Angeles Community College District or the greater Southern California area are: Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Mission College. West is located in the center of an area becoming known by the moniker Silicon Beach that witnesses a weekly increase in technology companies that focus on social media, gaming, entertainment, and emerging technologies. Also surrounding the college are large and small entertainment companies producing movies, videos, web-based games, and more. Companies of all types are looking for ways to connect with their customers and enhance the customer experience.
