Catalog Description

Engineering Technicians apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to practical technical problems. The Engineering Technology program is designed for those who want a hands-on engineering career with a focus on technology in an applied setting. The program provides students with foundational knowledge in mathematics, critical thinking, problem solving, and engineering design, as well as strong technical skills so that students can adapt to the ever-changing modern industrial workplace. Upon completion of the required core classes, engineering technology students select additional classes from an engineering discipline of interest – Mechanical, Energy Systems, or Environmental Resources Engineering. Engineering technicians serve as members of the engineering team and engage in the management, design, production, assembly, quality control and sales activities in their respective fields. Graduates of associate degree programs seek employment as engineering technicians or transfer to four-year engineering programs. Graduates of baccalaureate degree programs can earn a Professional Engineer's license in the state of California.  Students interested in transferring to baccalaureate degree programs should meet with a College of the Redwoods academic counselor to plan the courses required for transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

Program Goal

Upon completion of the Engineering Technology program, students will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to engineering technology problems that require the application of theoretical principles and practical knowledge.
  •  Design, construct, and produce creative solutions to engineering problems by applying the engineering design process and identifying pertinent design parameters based on the fundamental physics governing a system.
  • Display the fundamental knowledge necessary for the practice of, or for advanced study in, engineering, including scientific principles, rigorous analysis, and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrate clear communication skills, responsible teamwork, professional attitudes, and ethics.
