The Police Officer Training Certificate of Achievement is a program designed to prepare students to become entry-level police officers in local and state law enforcement agencies in California. This training course comprises 42 learning domains, including instruction in leadership, professionalism and ethics, the criminal justice system, policing in the community, introduction to criminal law, laws of arrest, search and seizure, presentation of evidence, investigative report writing, emergency vehicle operations, de-escalation and use of force training, traffic enforcement, crime scene investigation and evidence collection, forensics, custody, arrest and control methods, first aid/CPR, firearms, chemical agents, information systems, crimes against the justice system, cultural diversity/discrimination, and procedural justice. The course meets the certification requirements of the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

The purpose of the Rio Hondo Police Academy is to prepare the students mentally, morally, emotionally, physically and academically to enter and successfully complete the Field Officer Training Program at a law enforcement agency. The police academy instruction is directed towards providing a sensitivity to, and understanding of the role of the police officer within the criminal justice system, the employing police agency and the community to be served. The Rio Hondo Police Academy provides the student with the realization that proper policing results from creating an effective balance between energetic, assertive enforcement, and providing justice for the victim, the offender and society. Academy training and testing ensures that each student graduates from the academy with the demonstrated character, knowledge, problem solving abilities, human relations, communication and physical skills necessary to meet the professional standards and requirements of a peace officer.
The primary goal of the Rio Hondo Police Academy is to meet the needs of students who desire to be peace officers and provide them with the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) course that provide the student with the necessary sills and abilities to qualify for employment. The Basic Academy Course will assist the student with the successful completion of a Field Officer Training Program at a law enforcement agency, after the completion of the Basic Police Academy Program.
