Item 4.             Master Planning

The Graphic Arts department at Laney College has been in existence for more than 40 years. As one of Laney College’s oldest continuing departments the development of the graphic designer curriculum has maintained pace with the rapid changing technology found within the scope of this industry. In the ‘90sthe department deactivated the Pressroom Technology Program and modernized the computer labs with new technology. The courses included in this program have been offered for many years and this program has been extremely successful thus far. The Certificate of Achievement in Applied Graphic Design/Digital Imaging was developed through collaborative efforts of faculty in the Graphic Arts department and our industry advisory committee comprised of industry professionals.

As job requirements evolve over the years, many of our students have expressed an interest in furthering their education at 4-yearinstitutions. In 2016th the department revised some of the core courses to meet articulation requirements with 4-year institutions in Northern California offering degrees in Graphic Design. In 2020 we added a DE component to our courses to comply with COVID shelter in place ordinance. Offering some of our courses online has made them more accessible to working students, single parents, and students in a larger geographic area.

Our future plans involve the development of new certificates that reflect the current needs of the graphic design industry. The preference is for stackable certificates that allow the students to graduate faster. We will continue to update our certificate program every 3 years as per the CTE requirement. We will continue to update our courses to stay current with new technology.  Our master plan includes a creation of a fully online certificate to accommodate the increased demand for online classes.

Item 5.             Enrollment and Completer Projections

Interest in the Graphics in Motion Certificate of Achievement is expected to be modest at first and grow quickly through marketing efforts to bring this program into broader community awareness.  Enrollment and completion of the Graphics in Motion Certificate of Achievement are projected to be at least 10 per year after inaugural first two years of this program.
