Catalog Description

The Advanced Placement Associate of Science in Registered Nursing program provides an opportunity for Licensed Vocational Nurses to transition to Registered Nursing. The program includes courses specified in California Code of Regulations (CCR) section 1426 (attachment 1) and meets the requirements pursuant to the Business and Professional Code (BP&C) section 2786 (attachment 2). The

program has been identified as a critical need by the Nursing and Allied Health Advisory Committee and is fully supported by our industry partners.

The Advanced Placement Associate of Science in Registered Nursing Program at Lassen Community College prepares the graduate to practice as a registered nurse. The Lassen Community College nursing program meets the minimum degree requirements for the Associate of Science degree. The Associate of Science degree in nursing is awarded upon successful completion of the curriculum and the student will be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN) leading to licensure as a registered nurse.

Program Highlights

The Lassen Community College Advanced Placement Associates of Science in Registered Nursing Degree Program will provide the highest quality per-licensure nursing education to fully prepare students to successfully complete the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN) and enter the workforce as competent and confident nurses.

Advanced Placement students will be enrolled and will complete the second year of the generic registered nursing program. A minimum of ten advanced placement students, or more depending on the availability of vacant seats will be enrolled.

Upon completion, the advanced placement students will earn an associate degree in nursing and will be prepared to complete the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN).

Enrollment Completer Projections

This is an advanced placement program for individuals holding a License in Vocational Nursing, a minimum of ten students will earn an associate degree in nursing every 2 years and will be prepared to complete the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). More than ten students may be admitted based on the availability of seats in the program.

3. The graduate will therapeutically communicate and collaborate with culturally diverse patients, families, and the inter-professional healthcare team to achieve quality patient-centered care.

4. The graduate will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of the professional nurse, embracing lifelong learning to improve the quality of health care.

Program Requirements Narrative
  • Successful completion of the 12th grade or equivalent. 

  • Students are required to take the latest version of TEAS developed by the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI). A minimum passing composite score of 62% is required for consideration. Electronic transfer of TEAS scores will be required. The exam must be completed within the past three years.

  • Students must meet all health and safety requirements.  

  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a cumulative GPA in all college coursework of 2.5 or higher and no less than a C in any required prerequisite course:

*Advanced Placement Students are required to complete all of Lassen Community College Associates Degree Registered Nursing Program entry requirements and prerequisites. In addition, hold a:  

  • Current unencumbered California Licensed Vocational Nurse Licenses  

  • California State Blood Withdrawal and Intravenous Therapy Certification 

All advanced placement students will be required to successfully complete a transition course during the second semester of their intended cohort in order to be considered.
