Catalog Description

This Management (Applied) Associate of Science degree program leverages the existing knowledge, skills, and abilities each student brings into the program as it prepares students to progress in their careers and educational paths. The pre-planned sequencing of coursework and competencies builds on prior learning so that students are best prepared to succeed as they move through the coursework. For students with work experience, this program will provide them with the knowledge and skills to move up the career ladder to a manager role or to progress further along a supervisor/manager career path.

Courses required for this degree build and upgrade skills in leading and managing people while enhancing individual and organizational effectiveness within the workplace. Several communications-related courses are required in this program given that communication is a key managerial skill. Courses focus on the traditional managerial framework of leading, organizing, planning, communicating, training, and controlling. Coursework emphasizes embracing diversity within organizations and creating inclusive organizational cultures. Potential careers include General and Operations Managers, Administrative Services Managers, and Industrial Production Managers. Management positions are required in many industries and in businesses of many sizes.

Enrollment Completer Projections

The existing degree has a history of 114 completions annually. Because this new direct-assessment, CBE modality provides access to a population for whom a traditional online or in-person classroom setting does not meet their needs, we expect that a different population of learners will enroll in this degree program.  Our first-year estimate of enrollment is 45 students.

Program Goal

A degree in Management signals to employers that recipients have obtained knowledge, have practiced skills, and demonstrated competency in leadership, communication, operational accounting, initiative management, process improvement, problem-solving, and working with the organization at large.

Ten (10) different “Manager” job titles are listed in the Orange County Centers of Excellence “Resilient Jobs and Jobs for Recovery” report dated March 2023. These jobs are categorized by the report as Great Recession-Resilient, COVID-19 Pandemic Recession-Resilient, or Recession-Resilient. All are middle-skill jobs in Orange County offering a living wage, growth in demand, and a high number of job openings. Employers consistently face difficulties in filling positions with skilled and educated workers to hold leadership positions.

This program builds on the learner’s pre-existing skills, knowledge, abilities, and competencies. For those who are currently working, this program will provide them with the knowledge and skills to move up the career ladder to a manager role or to progress further along a supervisor/manager career path.

Program Requirements Narrative

The college has licensed the Polaris(R) Leadership Model from Organization Systems International. A subset (17) of the 41 competencies in this model was selected as the basis for this direct assessment (DA), competency-based education (CBE) degree as the degree supports entry-level managers.  As the competencies were mapped to courses, a multi-disciplinary degree was developed. The program contains three courses from the Communication Studies (CMST) discipline, three from the Computer Information Systems (CIS) discipline, and eight from the Business (BUS) and Management (MGMT) disciplines. Specific general education courses were selected to complement the leadership studies.
