The Business Analytics Program will provide students with a foundation in the fields of business analytics. Topics covered will include an introduction to data analytics, statistics, SQL queries, and data visualizations in the context of solving business problems. In addition to business analytics courses, core classes in business law, economics and accounting will also be offered.
We anticipate an enrollment of approximately 100+ students in the first academic year for the Associate of Science degree. Of those, based on historic persistence rates, we expect at least 70 students will apply for the A.S. each academic year. In addition, because the A.S. degree is designed to be stackable, we anticipate 50 certificate awards as well.
Upon completion of certificate and/or degree requirements, students will be able to exhibit proficiency in data analytics, statistics, SQL queries, and data visualizations in the context of solving business problems. Students who choose to pursue the more advanced A.S. degree will gain core business knowledge in business law, economics, and accounting. Transfer to four-year institutions to complete a BS/BA in Business Analytics is also an intended goal of this program.
To earn a Certificate of Achievement or A.S. Degree in Business Analytics, students must complete 21 or 38 specified units, respectively, that prepare them for entry-level jobs, such as Business Analytics Specialist, Data Analyst, and Marketing Analyst. Students who intend to pursue a 4-year degree in Business Analytics will be well prepared for success upon completion of the A.S. in Business Analytics.
This program will reside in the Business & Management Department which offers certificates and degrees in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Small Business Management, Project Management, Business Management, 21st Century Office Management, Human Resources Management, Facility Management, and Real Estate.
A projected undersupply of prospective candidates in community college programs to fill business analytics roles currently exists. For the Mid-Peninsula sub-region (San Francisco and San Mateo counties), the annual supply gap for qualified workers includes approximately 13,415 positions in the Bay Area, with 5,501 student completers in the Mid-Peninsula subregion, leaving approximately 7,914 annual openings unmet by community college “supply.” While no colleges in the immediate service region for CSM offers similar programs, three colleges in the Bay Area region, De Anza College, Laney College, and Santa Rosa College, offer programs under the same Top (0599.00 Other Business and Management) which produce approximately 261 awards annually (last 3 years) in total. College of San Mateo intends to meet the identified regional labor market demand by contributing to the number of student completers that are prepared to directly enter the workforce, or transfer for higher educational attainment at local four-year institutions including but not limited to CSU East Bay, Golden Gate University, Menlo College, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, St. Mary’s University, Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley, and the University of San Francisco.
