Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The Foundations of Merchandising Certificate of Achievement is designed for a student interested in a fashion merchandising-related career. Students gain an understanding of career opportunities within the fashion industry and develop a working knowledge of the phases involved in a constantly changing fashion industry. The CoA provides the opportunity to build skills to qualify for entry positions in sales, retail, marketing, wholesale buying, visual presentation, event production, or styling.
Upon completion, students can obtain employment and continue their studies, pursuing an AS in Fashion Merchandising and transferring to a university. While pursuing their educational goals, students will continue to progress in their careers. For example, a student will be employed as a retail salesperson and continue on to be a team lead and then an assistant manager. Thus, students will obtain employment and amass critical entry-level work experience from which to progress in their careers.

Mesa College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program because 1) entry-level wages for most Fashion Occupations are above the living wage for San Diego County and 2) a large supply gap exists. The region should note that employers typically require a bachelor’s degree as the minimum requirement for Fashion occupations.
