Catalog Description

Students completing this certificate will obtain valuable preparation needed to perform the duties of an entry-level Wildland Firefighter as required by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and to meet the minimum wildland fire training requirements needed for seasonal wildland fire control positions with most other fire agencies in California.

 

The Certificate provides students exposure to a structured environment emphasizing the professionalism and Culture common to the fire service. Students also learn skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level firefighter to recognize hazards and unsafe situations; don, doff, and maintain wildland personal protective equipment; deploy a fire shelter; maintain suppression hand tools and equipment; assemble and prepare for response; construct and secure a fire line; reduce the threat of fire exposure to improved properties; and mop up and patrol a fire area when working with wildland fires.

 

Upon Successful completion of the Certificate of Achievement Cal Fire Academy, the student will be able to:

1.       Demonstrate and understanding of fire behavior

2.       Identify Command staff and how they fit into ICS command structure

3.       Recognize Critical Structural Fire Ground Factors

4.       Be able to perform CPR

Program Goal

The goals and Objectives of this certificate are to meet the needs for well-trained wildland firefighters in the region. This area experienced a number of large fires including the Dixie fire, the Hog Fire and Sheep fire which highlight the need for more professionals in the fire service, especially our local region.  The coursework in this certificate provides the training students need to effectively perform the duties of an entry-level Wildland Fire fighter as required by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and to meet the minimum wildland fire training requirements needed for seasonal wildland fire control positions with both local and Federal Agencies

Program Requirements Narrative

The goal of the program is to provide fire agencies with well educated and highly trained entry level firefighters. Students will be trained in all aspects of firefighting including Hazardous Materials(Module 1B), Structural firefighting(Module1A),and Wild land firefighting (Module 1C).  In addition, students will receive instruction in Cal Fire Orientation, safety, Incident command organization and Professional First Aid and CPR.  Successful students will be fully qualified for hire to start a career with Cal Fire.
