Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement for Infant Toddler Teaching fulfills the state requirements of coursework to work with children birth to 36 months in a Title 22 licensed early care and education program.  This Certificate of Achievement allows entry level teachers to qualify to work with children under three years old.  Employees with coursework found in this COA will likely find higher level responsibility within the job market as lead teachers in infant or toddler classrooms.  The Certificate of Achievement also consists of transfer classes and coursework may be applied to related certificates and degrees at Ventura College.

Upon successful completion of this COA, students will be able to:

1.  Apply concepts of the progressive nature of child development to inform activity, experience, and lesson planning.

2. Describe how programs can support infants, toddlers, and their families.

3.  Describe and apply  best practice strategies for the care and education of infants and toddlers.

4. Gain hands-on experience with children 0-3.

5. Create developmentally appropriate activities and experiences for children 0-3 supported by state standards.

Internship requirements include proof of current negative TB test or chest x-ray and proof of immunity to measles and pertussis.  Influenza vaccinations, Covid vaccinations and booster are highly recommended. Live Scan may be required based on placement.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Because of a shift in the field of early care and education, many programs are shifting their focus to care for infants and toddlers.  Given this trend, we anticipate that a conservative estimate of at least 20 proficiency awards can be awarded each year.

Program Goal

The Certificate of Achievement for Infant Toddler Teaching fulfills the state requirements for coursework to work with children from birth to 36 months in a Title 22 licensed early care and education program. Students graduating with this certificate will be able to work with children from birth to age three in licensed child care programs. The certificate of achievement also consists of transfer classes and is part of related certificates and degrees at Ventura College.

Because of changes in the field from state decisions to expand transitional kindergarten to all four year old children and shortly to all 3 year old children, programs throughout the state are moving to more care for younger children birth to age three. State licensing law requires specified classes to work with this age group. This certificate of achievement will also be stackable with a proficiency award in infant toddler teaching. This COA will have stackable components to other PAs, COAs, and degrees.
