Catalog Description

The Uncrewed Aerial Systems degree program will prepare students to enter the sUAS/drone industries and prepare them to take the Part 107 FAA Exam to work with drones commercially.  Students will acquire skills in flight operations, government regulations, crew resource management, aerial photography, GIS/digital mapping, sUAS maintenance and repair, media and data processing as well as field data collection. These skills will provide them with a solid foundation in drone technology, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in jobs such as agriculture, engineering, film making, surveying, environmental monitoring, natural resources management, public safety, cartography, drone light show production, power line and pipeline inspection, roof inspection, news reporting, package delivery, and many others. The program will equip students with practical skills in piloting drones, capturing and analyzing data, and utilizing drone-related software and applications. Coursework will prepare students for industry certifications. Classwork will foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills through hands-on projects and real-world applications utilizing cutting-edge technology with the latest in professional software and curriculum will prepare graduates for the growing drone employment market as well as emerging industries utilizing drones and robotics and addresses the needs of students seeking non-traditional degrees. The program will also provide local business and public safety organizations an option for professional drone training for their current workplace needs.

Program Objectives would include:

1. Providing students with a comprehensive understanding of drone technology, including design, operation, maintenance, repair, and regulations.

2. Equiping students with practical skills in piloting drones, capturing and analyzing data, and utilizing drone-related software and applications.

3. Preparing students for industry certifications, such as the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.

4. Fostering critical thinking,problem-solving, and teamwork skills through hands-on projects and real-world applications utilizing cutting-edge technology and the latest in professional software and curriculum.

5. Preparing graduates for a growing sector of drone employment as well as emerging industries utilizing drones and robotics and the needs of students seeking non-traditional degrees.

6. Providing business and public safety organizations with professional drone training for their current workplace needs.

Student Learning Outcomes would include:

1. Demonstration of basic knowledge in sUAS drone systems, flight theory, maintenance logs/record keeping, pre-flight checklists, crew resource management, and software/hardware necessary for flight, media, and data collection.

2. Demonstration of basic knowledge of the applications and use of sUAS/drone systems in specific environments and purposes and of the sensor, payload, media, and data collection tools and software necessary to perform commercial, public safety, and scientific drone missions.

3. Completion of the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot aeronautical knowledge test to become commercially licensed to operate sUAS systems.

Learning Outcome Assessments would include:

Students develop an understanding of commercial drone applications. Acquire technical knowledge of drone operations for autonomous operations, public safety, and environmental applications, new regulations, drone delivery methods, and mission planning. Various autonomous drone systems would be utilized to gain hands-on skills in autonomous mission planning and flight.

Graduates acquire hands-on skills and training in drone piloting methods and techniques. Acquire technical knowledge of drone mapping software, geo-spatial/GIS tools, and the use of ground control points in preparation to gain employment in the UAS/UAV industry. Demonstrate proficiency in geospatial data processing methods, quality control procedures, and utilization of industry-standard mapping software.

The program participates gain skills and knowledge in drones airport terminology and radio communications to prepare students to take the Federal Aviation Administration's Part-107 exam and be certified to fly UAS/UAV systems for commercial use. Demonstrate knowledge of local and federal drone laws and FAA regulations, weather and meteorology terminology, National Airspace Systems rules and regulations, drone flight operations, aircraft systems, flight planning, and knowledge of image acquisition by Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
