Projected Start Date

Catalog Description

The bachelor's degree program in biomanufacturing will build seamlessly upon the associate degree program in biotechnology, allowing students who complete the associate degree or equivalent coursework from other colleges to enter as juniors and earn a baccalaureate degree.

The biomanufacturing bachelor’s degree program develops the skills, abilities, and knowledge that students need to work in the unique environment of biological production. It emphasizes the applied, quantitative analysis of biomanufacturing process design and performance to prepare students for employment in technical or quality positions in the manufacturing sector of the biotechnology industry, which includes biotherapeutics, diagnostics, supplies and services, and industrial products.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Los Angeles Mission College began offering the Biotechnology certificate and degree programs in fall 2016. The enrollment reached almost capacity in its third year. Despite the COVID emergency over the last 2 years and student reluctance to take courses in person, the LAMC biotechnology programs still had between 22 and 48 students enrolled per year.  Given the interest of former and current biotechnology students in a baccalaureate program in biomanufacturing, and the eventual end of the COVID pandemic and the return of students to on campus instruction, we are confident we will have the anticipated 30 student annual cohorts.

Given that the pandemic adversely impacted our enrollment—particularly since the classes were held in-person—and based on the survey above and the annual enrollment in our biotechnology certificate and degree programs, we are confident that the prospective baccalaureate program in biomanufacturing will have the required enrollment of 30 students annually. Based on success rates for similar programs at Solano and MiraCosta Colleges, we expect a minimum 80% completion rate, which translates to at least 24 completions per year.
