Multimedia: Video Production
Program Modifications (formerly substantial changes)
Digital Media (061400)
09/01/21
Students in the program are taught about cinematography, camera techniques, and postproduction. In our program, stu- dents take classes in Cinema History, Photography/Visual Storytelling, Audio Production, Digital Editing, and 2D Animation/motion Graphics. You can learn the ins and outs of pre- and post-production and non-linear editing, plus light- ing and audio for video and field production. Before graduat- ing, students compile work they created into a portfolio reel to show potential employers. Graduates of the program are prepared to seek entry-level jobs like cinematographer, video editor, scriptwriter, producer, and camera operator.
Program Learning Outcomes – Upon completion, students will be able to:
• Analyze and apply the elements and principles of produc-
tion design with competent skill and technique with pro- duction equipment such as cameras and computer editing software;
• Appraise historical, cultural, and aesthetic factors that led to rise of popular narrative and documentary filmmaking and how its model of production became the dominant form practiced by popular cinemas worldwide;
• Recognize, articulate, and judge the visual, verbal, and audio conventions through which images, words, and sounds make meaning in film and media texts.
20-30 Students per year
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
- A.A. Degree (A)
Minor update/changes to this existing program/certificate curriculum reflect our goal to continue to prepare students for high-skill jobs in the industry.
In an effort to create a stronger alignment with the California State Universities and with the University of California campuses, we have revised our program so that more classes will transfer for our students in order to allow more options for transfer into CSU’s various media programs. This change will also benefit our students so that they will not have to repeat courses, if they choose to transfer to the four-year universities. These new changes will also prepare students for other facets of employment, such as live studio/multi-camera production for events, such as sporting events and concerts. |

Course Report
Based on the available data, there appears to be a supply gap for media arts occupations in the LA/OC region. Due to some of the criteria being met, the COE endorses this proposed program.
"Currently there is a growing demand for skilled and certificated workers in L.A. Per the Centers of Excellence (COE) for Labor market Research,"
"these occupations is projected to increase by 7% through 2024."
Multimedia Video Production requires courses that prepare students to succeed in creating portfolios for industry careers and/or transfer.
The Degree/Cert can be completed in 2 years following our Guided Pathway.
This update better aligns with Film/TV/Cinema at the CSUs.
Explanation of minor Program Modification:
Multimedia: Video Production COA
Multimedia: Video Production Associate Degree
BOTH the AA and Certificate in this area are making the following changes to align with CSU Transfer and Industry standards.
1. We are adding Journalism 100 which is an existing course our District and at LAMC that students need as an undergrad requirement for transfer to CSU
2. We are adding the new course, which has been approved at LAMC, Multimedia 605. This is a lower division requirement at 4 of the CSUs in Film/TV. It is Studio Production.
3. We are adding 2 existing District courses, Cinema 107 and Cinema 125. These meet lower division requirements at the CSUs and UCs for Film/TV and they are also crucial for preparing students in the industry.
4. We are moving 3 courses into two “option” areas of the degree and certificate depending on which professional pathway a student wants to focus on.
