This certification for athletic coaching provides students with the foundational knowledge necessary to prepare them to move into the professional area of athletic coaching and advanced career opportunities. Students will explore the professional aspects of coaching theory, sports psychology, conditioning program development, leadership, and CPR/First Aid. The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment coaching in a variety of youth athletics and recreational programs, including schools, recreation programs, club athletic programs, and more.
1. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to analyze the numerous roles, responsibilities, coaching styles, and philosophies.
2. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to evaluate and develop a risk management plan for equipment, athletes, supervision, facilities, and additional areas that are specific to the sport.
3. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to create a career plan matched to their skills, aptitudes, and professional requirements.
4. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to design a year-round training program specific to the sport.
5. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to explore ethical issues related to coaching at the youth, intercollegiate, and professional levels.
We anticipate 25 students to enroll in this program annually, with approximately 15 completions per year.

Students must complete a total of 18 units of coursework consisting of 15 units of required core courses and 3 units selected from a list of restricted elective courses.
A grade of 'C' or better in all courses is required to meet course outcome goal.
