Catalog Description:

The certificate in Mechatronics and Automation Components is designed to provide the students with comprehensive knowledge about the different components used in any automated system. The components covered are pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, motors, and PLC. The program prepares students for careers in the design, operation, and maintenance of industrial automation systems focusing on the local industries that utilize these technologies, such as food production, petroleum production, fabrication, and logistics. This program applies electronics and computer technology to industrial automation systems, including instrumentation and control, industrial robotics, and process control systems. Significant emphasis is placed on project-based learning facilitated by significant laboratory work.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Mechatronics and Automation Components Certificate program will equip students with comprehensive knowledge about various components used in automated systems. The program is for individuals who have completed high school education or equivalent and can understand and communicate in English. 

The program places significant emphasis on laboratory work, which allows students to gain hands-on experience with different components used in automated systems. The program consists of four required courses: Electric Motors and Controls, Mechanical Systems, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems, Digital Fundamentals, and PLC Programming. Successful completion requires a grade of C or better.

Upon completing the program, students will have a deep understanding of the structure of an automated system and the role of different components in a fully integrated system. They should also have a thorough knowledge of the automated manufacturing platform and the automation industry, including design, operation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and integration. Additionally, students should be able to apply problem-solving skills in designing an automated system and product development.
