Architecture: Basic Knowledge

This Certificate of Achievement provides a focus on the basic knowledge courses of study for students in preparation to enter into majors in Architecture. Emphasis is placed on foundational knowledge in the use of architectural document reading and architectural styles. Coursework involves the interpretation of basic architectural documents and projects accomplished within an industry environment, as is common in entry-level workplace conditions.

The goal of this Certificate is to focus the education of students preparing for higher ed in fields of architecture or construction management. Students who have completed the coursework for this Certificate will have basic knowledge of the architectural field.

In the ACEDD department's efforts to better align our pathways with specific employment opportunities, we identified a variety of associated courses and brought these to our most recent Industry Advisory meetings.  The intent of these efforts and the proposed coursework was discussed and enthusiastically approved.  Additional discussion was held between the industry professionals who are part of our instructional faculty with direct knowledge and experience of the needs of industry as related to students with specific coursework completed.  Such discussions allowed us to identify the specific group of courses applicable to this proposed Certificate.

This program is complimentary to other Certificates and Degrees in the field of Architecture. Although some coursework is common, completion of this program indicates a focus on foundational knowledge needed within the field of architecture/construction management (which are addressed in other related Certificates and Degrees).

The LMI listed various colleges with similar programs that fall under Architecture and Drafting, but did not see any that listed a basic skills component, which is the one we are submitting this report for. There was at least 13 other LA Colleges with these types of programs.
