The Emergency Medical Services: BLS Provider Certificate of Achievement is designed to provide the course work and training for the Emergency Medical Technician licensure exam, and further prepare students for entry into firefighting, emergency medical services and paramedical services.
College of Marin has offered these courses for many years but has not offered a Certificate of Achievement. Based on our current enrollment and history of offering these courses, we expect 45 -60 successful completions each year.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 8 to fewer than 16 semester (or 12 to fewer than 24 quarter) units (B)
The courses for this program prepares students to become license Emergency Medical Technicians. Students will be trained to:
- Conduct an initial patient assessment in order to identify the nature of the emergency
- Synthesize initial assessment data to identify the scope of emergency medical services required and formulate a treatment plan to provide care until more advanced emergency personnel arrive on scene
- Select the appropriate manipulative skill set(s) based on the treatment plan developed and perform them in order to deliver safe out of hospital care until more advanced emergency medical personnel arrive on scene
- Conduct an on-going assessment and adapt the treatment plan and skill sets as needed in order to address the patients evolving medical, behavioral, or traumatic conditions until more advanced emergency medical personnel arrive on scene
- Perform the assessments and skill set(s) expected of Emergency Medical Responder performance standards in order to deliver safe and effective services
- Perform the assessments and skill set(s) expected of Emergency Medical Technician Basic per U.S. Department of Transportation mandated performance standards in order to deliver safe and effective services
Providing students with a certificate of achievement gives students a demonstrated ability to highlight their achievements in the fire technology coursework, related to their career or other educational endeavors.

The FIRE 215 - Advanced First Aid/First Responder and FIRE 112 - Emergency Medical Technician courses prepare students for an employable licensure and satisfies partial prerequisites for nursing, firefighting, and/or nursing programs
