After completion of the Municipal Gardener Level 1 Certificate of Achievement, students can continue on to the coursework needed to complete the Municipal Gardener, Level 2 Certificate of Achievement. Those who earn the Municipal Gardener, Level 2 Certificate of Achievement, will have the theoretical and practical skills required for entry level municipal gardener supervisory positions.
Enrolling in COPED 452A, the work experience course, is a requirement for this certificate. Students must secure 315 hours of paid or unpaid work in landscape horticulture. The minimum time for completion of this certificate is 2 semesters. Completion time will vary based on student preparation and the number of units completed per semester.
The Certificate of Achievement will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of all program requirements.
Program Learning Outcome: Demonstrate the following horticultural practices: Identify basic irrigation components and installation of drip irrigation systems; proper planting, pruning and routine maintenance for landscape plants.
Based on demand and labor market info, we estimate that 25 students will complete this program annually. The City of Oakland Public Work department has expressed interest in partnering with Merritt College to develop a model contract education program emphasizing experiential learning.

The goal of the Municipal Gardener, Level 2Certificate of Achievement is to provide students the theoretical and practical skills required for Municipal Garden entry and supervisory jobs. Workers in these positions, and similar positions noted below, typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, digging, and raking.
