 Catalog Description:
The certificate in Mechatronics/Industrial Automation is designed to prepare students for employment as entry-level industrial automation technicians. The program prepares students for careers in the design, operation, and maintenance of industrial automation systems focusing on the local industries that utilize these technologies, such as food production, petroleum production, fabrication, and logistics. This program applies electronics and computer technology to industrial automation systems, including instrumentation and control, industrial robotics, and process control systems. Significant emphasis is placed on project-based learning facilitated by significant laboratory work. To earn a certificate, complete the courses listed below with a minimum grade of “C”. At least 50% of all coursework must be completed at Cypress College.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Cypress College Mechatronics/Industrial Automation certificate program is designed to prepare students for entry-level industrial automation technician positions. The program is tailored to focus on local industries, such as food production, petroleum production, fabrication, and logistics, that utilize industrial automation systems. Students will gain a solid foundation in applying electronics and computer technology to industrial automation systems, emphasizing instrumentation and control, industrial robotics, and process control systems.

Throughout the program, students will engage in project-based learning with significant laboratory work to facilitate their understanding of automated systems' structure and the role of different components in a fully integrated system. They will develop a deep understanding of automated manufacturing platforms and the automation industry, including design, operation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and integration. In addition, students will develop strong problem-solving skills to design automated systems and develop products.

To earn a certificate, students must complete the required courses in the suggested sequence with a minimum grade of "C." Students must also complete at least 50% of all coursework at Cypress College.

The program's required courses are Introduction to Embedded Systems, Instrumentation and Process Control, Electricity and Electronics, Industrial Design and Graphics, Electric Motors and Controls, Mechanical Systems, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems, Digital Fundamentals and PLC Programming, and Industrial Data Network and HMI, totaling 29 units. Upon completing the program, students will have the knowledge and skills to understand, design, operate, and maintain industrial automation systems, preparing them for entry-level positions.
