The Media Arts: Graphic Design (Transfer Option) program provides a clear pathway for transfer students interested in further studies toward a California State University (CSU) baccalaureate degree in Art and Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design. The curriculum includes lower-division foundational art courses and lower-division graphic design-specific courses. It is designed to develop visual literacy skills, and technical skills, plus opportunities for creative thinking and portfolio development for transfer.
Transfer requirements include completion of 60-semester units that are eligible for transfer to California State Universities, including the following: A) The completion of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) OR the California State University General Education-Breadth (CSU GE). B) Allan Hancock College’s graduation requirements. C) Obtainment of an overall minimum grade point average of 2.0. D) A Minimum grade of "C" (or "P") for each course in the major. This is not an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT), ask your counselor for more information.
Estimated annual number of Enrollment and Completer Projections = 5
This is based on a 5-year average number of students who transfer annually to study Graphic Design in the Art & Design College and the Graphics Reproduction & Communications programs at Cal Poly - our most popular transfer institution. We also have students transfer to San Jose State University, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal State Fullerton.
The Media Arts: Graphic Design Associate of Science (Transfer Option) program is designed to prepare students for transfer to four-year university graphic design and digital media programs. Coursework includes lower-division foundation art courses and electives specific to graphic design majors. After transfer and completion of a Bachelor of Arts, or a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, students may be employed as graphic designers, illustrators, advertising managers, art directors, special effects artists, animators, and arts educators.
The major course requirements in this program are a combination of Graphic Design and Arts courses that are aligned with requirements at many CSUs that offer Graphic Design BA or BFA degrees. This program is built with existing courses and utilizes existing articulation agreements in the Fine Arts department with CSU GE courses and supports transfers to CSUs similar to the purpose of ADTs - to get students to graduation and jobs.
The proposed ADT for Graphic Design was recently canceled by the Chancellor's Office because many CSU programs have a portfolio requirement. As a consequence, our students who are interested in transferring are advised into a Studio Arts ADT, that has no Graphic Design courses and ultimately fail to get accepted because their portfolio does not show any work related to the Graphics discipline.
