The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate of Achievement prepares students to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1). Students will learn the appropriate technique for venipuncture, arterial blood draw, and specimen collection in settings such as hospitals and out-patient clinics. Upon completion, students are eligible to register and take the required National Phlebotomy Certification Examination. Students who complete this certificate and pass the required exam will then be credentialed as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1). This certificate provides students a way to join the workforce as a CPT1, suitable to work in hospitals, clinics, or home health environments.
Cabrillo College's phlebotomy program is accredited by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Students who wish to earn the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate of Achievement must read the additional information available on the Medical Assisting department website at https://www.cabrillo.edu/medical-assisting/.
The Cabrillo College Phlebotomy Technician Certificate of Achievement is projected to have an enrollment of 40 students/year with 40 completing the certificate annually.
Cabrillo College is seeking approval from the Chancellor’s Office for the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate of Achievement in Career Education. The Phlebotomy program is designed to train and educate students to work in the fields of phlebotomy. The need for certified phlebotomy technicians has been advocated for by local health clinics and organizations plus regional and state laboratories, and supported by current, regional labor market research (TOP 1205.10). The Phlebotomy program is aligned with Cabrillo’s mission, master plan, career education, and statewide community college work in Guided Pathways. Approval of this program will benefit regional employers, fulfill health and human service needs of the local community, augment college enrollment, and support non-traditional and underserved minority students in a viable career and academic path. This program will give our students the workforce preparation, knowledge, and skills they need to pass the state board license examination and gain employment in the field of phlebotomy. The potential for a median hourly wage in the Santa Cruz-Monterey subregion is $26.83/hour and the Bay Area region is $24.22.
