A certificate in Full Stack Web Application Developer will provide the developer with the tools to understand front end, middleware, and back end of a web application. The primary goal of this program is to create a certificate that prepares students for internships while pursuing their degrees. A secondary goal is to provide an opportunity for industry workers wanting to advance their careers. Currently there are private coding boot camps that provide the training in a short period and at a high cost to the students. Los Angeles City College wants to teach the same skills to its students, in a short period but at lower cost and for college credit.
“Los Angeles City College empowersstudents from the diverse communities it serves to achieve their educationaland career goals by providing pathways to support their completion of associatedegrees, certificates, transfer requirements, career and technical education, and foundational skills programs.”
The new program, Full StackDevelopment is in line with our LACity College mission statement (see above) of our college. The impetus for thisprogram was the LA Hi-Tech Coding Boot Camp program. This program was field tested with twodifferent cohorts. All the students got internships and many landed full-timejobs. Based on the success of these trials the program was implemented at WLACand LAMC within our District. At LAMC it is a state approved certificate ofAchievement. Currently, there is a cohort of 19 students from LACOE takingthese classes towards the Certificate of Achievement.
Based on the available data, there appears to be a supply gap for web developers in the region. Over thenext five years, there is projected to be 905 jobs available annually in theregion due to new jobs and replacements, which is more than the 553 awardsconferred annually by educational institutions in the region.
