The certificate provides the student with the necessary knowledge, skills, and background to work in the field of convention reporting, hearing reporting, police department reporting, congressional reporting, and related fields. To earn a certificate, the required courses are listed with a grade of C or better. At least 50 percent of all course work must be completed at Cypress College. This certificate requires a total of 25 units.

The goal of the program is to train students to become hearing reporters who can work in the field of convention and hearing reporting. This profession can be licensed or un-licensed in the state of California. The program prepares students for both career paths.
The program trains students to write at speeds upwards of 160 words per minute in order to work as a hearing reporter in the state of California. The students will be introduced to a variety of topics including literary material, medical terminology, and congressional record material.
