The Certificate of Achievement in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is designed for those interested in entry level welding skills to required GTAW Aluminum, low carbon, and stainless steels. Course work includes a comprehensive study with an emphasis on application of fundamental welding techniques and safe industry practices. There are material fees for the courses associated with the program totaling $90.00. The student will also be required to provide all PPE safety gear (personal protective gear) required to safely perform SMAW welds in the lab.
The department expects to graduate 5-10 students in the program per year.
1. Demonstrate advanced level skills to produce quality welds in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions using the GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) process.
The basic occupational competencies students will acquire include: acquire the necessary skills to produce quality GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions; able to interpret welding symbols and drawings required for entry into the welding and metal fabrication industry; be able to interpret the text, figures and tables found in AWS (American Welding Society) D9.1 Sheet Metal Welding Code book; be prepared for an entry level welding positions as a sheet metal worker, pipefitter and welder.
Due to Guided Pathway efforts, Long Beach City College is sending low unit Certificates of Accomplishment (12-17.5 units) to the Chancellor’s Office for approval. Once approved, these already-existing programs will become Certificates of Achievement and will allow the College to better serve students and assist in streamlining and increasing completions.
