The Certificate of Achievement in Elder Care Human Services is designed to prepare students for entry level work in social services settings with adults, aged 65 years and older or, with additional completed general education course work, to transfer as a junior to a baccalaureate degree program in Social Work. This Certificate is for a person who has a strong desire to provide human services to older adults. These introductory courses will give the student a good fundamental working knowledge of the social services system addressing the needs of older adults.

1. Articulate the social work professional identity and have an introductory understanding of the knowledge base required for beginning/entry level social work practice with elders.
2. Integrate the social work knowledge base with a developing ability to use critical thinking(analyze and synthesize relevant information) to inform and communicate professional judgments regarding human services for elders.
3. Assess the impact of aging upon individuals, their families, and society.
4. Apply Systems Theory, the Strengths Perspective, and the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics to determine the intertwined needs of an elder client and construct a case plan outline.

These introductory courses will give the student a good fundamental working knowledge of the social services system addressing the needs of older adults. Completion of the course work leads to a Certificate of Achievement in Elder Care Human Services: Pre-Social Work Option.
Students must take the required courses listed in theCore and select 12 units from a list of options.
