The International Business Program is designed to provide students with an introduction to the central aspects of international business such as economic, political, cultural, and social environments and their impact on planning and executing international business ventures. The focus will be on entry strategies, marketing, finance, ethics, and principles associated with the international exchange of goods, services, and foreign direct investments. The program will provide students with tools for evaluating and executing global business and trade opportunities.
We anticipate an enrollment of approximately 70+ students in the first academic year. Of those, based on historic persistence rates, we expect at least 50 students will apply for the A.S. each academic year. In addition, because the A.S. degree is designed to be stackable, we anticipate 50 certificate awards as well.
Upon completion of certificate and/or degree requirements, students will be able to exhibit proficiency in basic economics and business concepts; evaluate key issues in cultural, political, geographical, and ethical differences when conducting international business; and develop entry and trade strategies into other markets by recognizing the nature of institutions and forces governing the process of globalization. Transfer to four-year institutions to complete a BS/BA in International Business is also an intended goal of this program.
To earn a Certificate of Achievement or A.S. Degree in International Business, students must complete 24 or 38 specified units, respectively, that provide comprehensive knowledge of traditional business operations within a global framework as preparation for advancing in the workforce.
This program will reside in the Business & Management Department which offers certificates and degrees in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Small Business Management, Project Management, Business Management, 21st Century Office Management, Human Resources Management, Facility Management, and Real Estate.
A projected undersupply of prospective candidates in community college programs to fill international business roles currently exists. For the Mid-Peninsula region, the annual supply gap for qualified workers includes approximately 15,520 positions in the Bay Area, with 4,378 student completers in the Mid-Peninsula Sub-Region, leaving about 11,100 annual openings unmet by community college “supply.” Two colleges in the Mid-Peninsula region, Skyline College and City College of San Francisco, offer International Business programs that produce approximately 11 awards annually (last 3 years) in total. College of San Mateo intends to meet the identified regional labor market demand by contributing to the number of student completers that are prepared to directly enter the workforce, or transfer for higher educational attainment at local four-year institutions including but not limited to CSU East Bay, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, UC Berkeley, Golden Gate University, University of San Francisco, St. Mary’s University, Menlo College, and Santa Clara University.
