This course provides STC training curriculum for newly promoted correctional supervisors. Topical areas covered during the 80 hours of instruction include: role identification, leadership styles, values, ethics, motivating employees, assertive leadership, administrative support, employee performance appraisal, employee relations, liability issues, discipline, counseling, planning, and organization, communications, investigations, report review, problem solving, training and role transition.
Learning outcomes include:
1. Define the roles, responsibilities and duties of a supervisor.
2. Discuss the various principles of management theory and process.
3. Identify the various styles of supervision.
4. Discuss supervisor / employee interactions in regards to employee evaluations, grievance procedures and the disciplinary process.
5. Explain the importance of the role of a supervisor in terms of safety in the workplace, cultural awareness within the department, and the effective use of employee assistance programs.
Yuba College anticipates 40 annual completers. This estimate was determined after examining the occupational employment and projected demand data, the North (Greater Sacramento) program supply data, and after speaking to regional agency training managers and STC, who have all asked that Yuba College present this course.
The goal of the STC Supervisor Core course is to provide and meet basic training needs for newly appointed supervisory corrections staff. The 80-hour course must be completed during the worker's first year of assignment as a jail / adult institution, juvenile institution, or probation department supervisor.
Students will be correctional staff who have either promoted to a supervisor or are being sent by their agencies for career development. Students will be required to:
1. Listen to instructor lectures.
2. Participate in group activities.
3. Discussion contemporary correctional issues.
4. Conduct and discuss case studies on recent or emerging
correctional issues.
5. Participate in mock counseling and evaluation sessions.
6. Prepare reports, documents, and memorandums.
7. Take notes.
8. Pass quizzes and exams.
9. Complete homework and out of class assignments as necessary.
