The Barbering curriculum consists of a minimum of, but not limited to, 1500 hours of instruction and requires a 2.0 average or higher in each barbering course to earn 47.5 units of college credit and a Certificate of Completion in Barbering. It prepares the student to qualify for the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology examination and the workforce. Upon passing the state examination, the student will be issued a Barbering license by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
Riverside City College projects 150 students to earn a certificate or degree in Barbering annually.
The Barbering program prepares students for the workforce through the instruction of care and styling of hair, and care of complexion, including hygiene, customer relations, and salon management. In 2017, there were 10,326 Barbering group jobs in the Inland Empire/Desert Region. Employment related to this group is expected to increase by 12% through 2022. Regional employers will need to hire 7,434 workers during the five-year time frame to fill new jobs and to back fill jobs that workers are permanently leaving (includes retirements).
