Program Description
Provides students an opportunity to specialize in payroll accounting and to qualify for entry-level payroll positions in industry or in a payroll service. The curriculum includes basic accounting concepts along with specialized payroll accounting and reporting procedures. Payroll is a specialized area of accounting with complicated federal and state government reporting and legal requirements. Employment opportunities exist in various business and government sectors, payroll service companies, and accounting firms. The payroll assistant generally reports to the payroll supervisor or accountant, and will be involved in activities such as time tracking, paying bills, record keeping, balancing payroll accounts, and tax returns.
Learning Outcome:
1. To provide students with the necessary classes to construct payroll journals, employee subsidiary ledgers, and payroll tax returns to satisfy Federal and California requirements.
2. To provide students with the necessary classes to record these payroll transactions and solve payroll issues using computerized accounting software and electronic business spreadsheets.
