This certificate program is designed to prepare students for a career in legal, medical, or community interpretation and/or translation. The courses in this program are designed to prepare students to pass the State of California Court Interpreter Certification Exam.
Please note: There is a separate application process for this program. Interested students should submit an application so they can be notified when the next group of students will begin the Translation and Interpretation program sequence. This date will depend on the number of interested students and the availability of instructors.
Minimum requirements:
1. All applicants must be fluent in Spanish and English and have a speaking proficiency equivalent to that of an educated native speaker. Applicants will need to take a bilingual proficiency assessment.
2. It is recommended that all applicants have completed at least one term of college English.
3. All applicants must submit a Translation and Interpretation Program application.
4. All applicants must attend a program orientation.

The Translation and Interpretation: Spanish Certificate of Achievement at Evergreen Valley College is recommended for students who want to enhance their skills for careers as an interpreter and/or translator. The Bay Area offers numerous positions requiring employees with these skills, including the medical, legal, educational, corporate and community arenas. The Translation and Interpretation: Spanish certificate program is designed to prepare students for employment as a Spanish translator/interpreter and to take state and federal certification exams.
This program offers a sequence of classes with practice components. Students get the practical experience theyto learn to interpret and translate at the level required in the marketplace.
The overall purpose of this Certificate of Achievement is to assist EVC students from various backgrounds to meet the requirements for careers in this growing field.
Program Goals and Objectives: Students who complete the program will be able to:

The first semester courses are TIS 031 and TIS 035, which lay the groundwork for the program. The second semester offers TIS 032, TIS 036A and TIS 037A, which refine language skills and begin the work of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. Semester three courses are the advanced level of both interpretation skills plus a deeper analysis of the linguistics of Spanish and English. Courses need to be taken in this order.
