This program includes a selection of courses that provides academic preparation to individuals for a career working with school age children in before and after school and enrichment programs. The program will give students general knowledge and skills in theory, principles, and techniques for working with school age children in an entry level position.
We anticipate more students to complete this now that it is a Certificate of Achievement. We enroll 40 students in the two capstone classes for this certificate.
The primary goal for this certificate is to prepare students for work in early childcare and grade school environments—particularly ages 5-12 in before and after school programs. The classes/program are aligned to implement developmentally appropriate best practices for these age groups. ·
This program is the only one like it in the area. There are no other similar programs at the neighboring colleges. The students focus on school age development and curriculum. These students are prepared to teach in after school programs and as school age assistants. This certificate attracts students who are interested in teaching elementary and secondary levels and affords the opportunity to work in these settings before they are credentialed.
