The Yoga Instructor 300-hourcertificate prepares students to meet the requirements to become a 500-hourregistered yoga teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance. This comprehensive and wisdom-based program uses anatomy and physiology as well as English and Sanskrit terminology to provide students with both a broad background and practical experience in the essential elements of yoga. Completion of the program prepares students for employment in health clubs, spas, yoga studios, hospitals,and the health industry as well as for self-employment as yoga instructors.
The Yoga Instructor (300-hours) Certificate of Achievement is part of MiraCosta College’s Career Education program. The certificate helps to prepare students for a career in teaching yoga at health and fitness clubs, wellness centers, schools, and YMCAs, and for teaching yoga to individual clients. The program helps to create local community and industry partnerships through internship sand cooperative work experience.
“Between 2020 and 2025, Exercise Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors are projected to increase by 563 net jobs or 11 percent. Employers in San Diego County will need to hire 907 workers annually to fill new jobs and backfill jobs due to attrition caused by turnover and retirement, for example.”
25 students annually (average of the last five academic years) complete the MiraCosta College 300-hour Yoga Teacher Training Program.
Upon completion of this program, a student will be able to demonstrate intelligent and safe sequences and themes for a wide population.
Note: Since the certificate requires 12-16 units "certificate of achievement: 16 or greater units was selected. Neither option allows for "up to and including 16 units."
The Yoga Instructor (300-hours)Certificate of Achievement is designed for students seeking gainful employment teaching yoga as well as for students seeking personal growth and knowledge in yoga and overall wellness. The program trains students to design and implement a safe yoga sequence for all levels with a variety of yoga poses, restorative movements, breathing techniques and meditation. Students develop the independent yoga and meditation practice, learn stress management techniques,and practice oral communication skills through teaching yoga. Additionally, students examine career and business opportunities within the fields of yoga, integrative health, and wellness and have an opportunity to enroll in a yoga internship or cooperative work experience to gain experience teaching yoga in the community.

The COE recommends proceeding with caution when developing a new program, but supports a program modification because 1) there is a supply gap; 2) there is a high number of annual job openings; but 3) entry-level wages are below the living wage.
