The Small Business Management/Entrepreneurship - Level I Certificate of Achievement encompasses an area of study which includes a overall study of basic business issues, legal and other business organizational issues, numerous issues faced by small business owners, and some basic bookkeeping principles and the use of relevant software. This certificate is designed to prepare students to open their own businesses, and the courses supporting the certificate combine classroom lectures, demonstrations, and a wide use of technology to ensure relevant training.
It is estimated that we will have 15 students complete this certificate annually.
The Business program is creating a Small Business Management/Entrepreneurship Level II Certificate to fulfill the current and projected demand for people who might be interested in opening their own businesses. As was the case with the Small Business Management Level I Certificate, this new certificate is also supported by the Business Advisory Committee, which met on September 24, 2021, and the COE report dated October 2020.
Other departments on campus were surveyed, and it was concluded that there may be an interest in and a need to create a program for nontransfer students who may want to open their own businesses, particularly for students studying in the areas of auto technology, cosmetology, and other CTE disciplines, as well as potentially in the music, theater arts, dramatic arts, and fine arts disciplines.
This certificate is designed to prepare students seeking to open their own businesses to be better prepared to do so, at even a higher level than the Level I certificate. It also will prepare students (1) for higher-level positions in business, industry, and governmental agencies; and (2) to seek additional promotions and advancements with their current or future employers, before they ultimately venture out to open up their own businesses.
