Catalog Description

The Associate of Arts and Certificate of Achievement in Graphic Design provides courses that prepare students for related workforce needs in the Media Art industry. Skills in Graphic Design are highly desirable across various industries, such as advertisement, media, print, games and tech. These are high demand skills in any corporation that promote visual design as part of their branding, social media, marketing, outreach and assets.

Students enrolled in this program will develop design skills in traditional and digital format, laying a strong foundation in visual design with necessary tools required for a strong graphic design portfolio. Students will learn graphic design principles and techniques as per the industry standard using professional software. Students will utilize additional skills such as Motion Graphics and Web Design to boost their expertise as per today's job market.

At the completion of this program students will have a well-rounded professional Graphic Design portfolio and have necessary skill sets for workforce requirements in a growing industry. The courses in our Certificate of Achievement will create a guided pathway for student success with this AA Degree in Graphic Design.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

Apply the elements and principles of design in finished digital media projects for a Graphic Design portfolio.
Create original design projects that analyze, define, and solve problems in visual communications.
Develop technical and creative problem solving skills to conceptualize, design, produce, and present original applications of typography in graphic design projects.
Produce digital images, video composites and other multimedia projects through various digital media input and output methods using vector and raster-based software.
Evaluate and critique digital media projects utilizing relevant terminology and concepts.

Program Goals

Program Goal:

The goal of this program is Career Education for occupational purpose and transfer. This program will prepare students for the job opportunities such as Graphic Designer, Brand Identity Manager, Visual Designer and similar jobs.

Objective:

The Associate of Arts and Certificate of Achievement in Graphic Design program is designed to prepare the students to enter the workforce with the knowledge they need to acquire an entry-level Graphic Design position. After completion of the Certificate of Achievement program, students may obtain an AA degree by completion of the required general education courses to meet a 60-unit total.

The goal of this program is to increase diversity in the digital art industry by providing an education platform for entry-level Graphic Design artists. This program aims to develop the quality and quantity of design professionals to fulfill industry needs and generate greater economic impact in the Bay Area region.

The AA program includes 9 hands-on courses. Students will be required to take additional 33 units of GE courses for a total of 60 units. Two of the core classes (6 units) also count as GE, making it 39 units for GE.

At San Jose City College, our current Art program does not cover any of the newer technology in Computer Graphics and Digital Media. Our new Department - Digital Media Arts plans to cover the gap by offering these newer programs. With these programs we want to create a pathway for our students to be able to learn necessary skills for today's job market, and also be able to transfer to a 4 year college. This program proposal has been established in consultation with our industry advisory board. Our industry advisors are from various bay area entertainment companies such as Pixar, ServiceNow, Google, Electronic Art and Sixense Games. For employment prospects in various areas within Media Arts, they recommended few programs for better job opportunities - Graphic Design is one of them. Our industry advisors worked with us in creating specific courses, with skills they need for hiring within their own companies and others. As the only Community College designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution in the city of San Jose, I believe a program of such kind will benefit our students greatly. We have felt the need for a program of such kind for many years based on student demand and workforce requirements in our area. Our program is unique in that it can be completed fully online, and also features complementary skill sets such as Web Design and Motion Graphics that are needed for current employment opportunities.

I contacted every college in our service area that has a similar program. I made every effort to reach out to colleges even those that were not listed in the LMI. Details below: Foothill: Teresa Ong, Associate Vice President, Workforce & Career Education De Anza: Randy Bryant, Dean, CTE & Workforce Development Canada: Hyla Lacefield, Dean of Business, Design and Workforce (Interim) Ohlone: Sara Goldware, Director, Strong Workforce & Career Pathways West Valley: Brad Weisberg, Dean, Career Programs and Workforce Development Mission: Jeffrey Pallin, Dean, Business/Technology Service San Mateo: Alex Kramer, Director of Workforce Development Gavilan: Susan Sweeney, Interim Dean, Student Success & Workforce Pathways After contacting colleges in the Silicon Valley sub-region with similar programs, Foothill College suggested that since their Graphic Design programs map to TOP 1030.00 (Graphic Art and Design), I should consider also looking at supply data for TOP 1030.00 in the sub-region, since both programs will train for the same job (Graphic Designer). I contacted John Carrese from the COE for Labor Market Research and asked him to look at the supply data for both TOP 0614.00 (Digital Media and TOP 1030.00 (Graphic Art and Design) and compare that to the demand for Graphic Designers in the sub-region and region. John replied with the following information: " Even when the supply from TOP 0614.00 and TOP 1030.00 is combined for the colleges and other educational institutions in the sub-region that have these two programs and then is compared to the demand for Graphic Designers in the sub-region, there is still an undersupply of 162 students annually to the labor market. For the 12 county Bay region the undersupply is 615, when supply from both TOP codes is combined for the colleges and other educational institutions in the region and compared to demand for Graphic Designers. Based on the LMI report and the advise from our Industry Advisory board, I remain convinced that our program is unique and does not duplicate any existing program in colleges in our service area. Our program is also different in that we feature traditional skills that we usually see in this subject, as well as complementary skills that make the portfolio stronger. No other program in nearby colleges are identical to ours.
