This program is designed to exceed minimum Board of Barbering California standards. A combination of lecture and laboratory instruction includes personal hygiene and grooming; salesmanship and skills in serving the public; antisepsis, bacteriology, sterilization, and principles of sanitation; safety requirements in operation of a barbershop; principles of chemistry; laws and administrative regulations.
Upon completion of the required courses with at least a “C” grade or better in each course, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, Barbering.
For the fall 2022 semester we had 69 unduplicated students enrolled in our cosmetology program. We anticipate that approximately half of these students will pursue the additional course required for the Barbering Certificate, leading to 35 completers each year. We also may see higher completers initially due to former students coming back to take the course required for them to meet the requirements for to test at the State Board to obtain their Barbering License.
1) Demonstrate proficiency in state Board regulations in sanitation and safety; perform appropriate cosmetology procedures with emphasis in all aspects of hair, skin, and nails.
2) Demonstrate logic and critical thinking when presented with difficult situations such as color correction, customer service, handling difficult clients, and/or contraindications.
3) Demonstrate their knowledge in principles of chemistry and personal hygiene; assessing the client’s skin, perform facial services that include various massaging and shaving techniques, such as straight razor, use of antisepsis, bacteriology, and sterilization.
4) Enter the job market with clear knowledge of current trends, standard, and
technology.
This 30.5 unit Certificate of Achievement program will offer students the ability to get the required hours of instruction to test for their Barbering License through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. This Certificate program will use existing coursework from our Cosmetology program, in addition to the Barbering course in order to meet the required hours. We anticipate many of our current and former cosmetology students pursuing this opportunity since it will only require one additional course.
