Human resources professionals help organizations hire, develop, and retain the best people for the benefit of organizations. In addition to some administrative functions, HR helps modify and implement policies, rules, and organizational change. HR professionals work side-by-side with managers to navigate the complex welfare and employment laws. This course is designed for those planning to become human resources practitioners or who need to understand the HR role. The program provides the foundational knowledge and essential skills necessary for anyone touching the HR role. Students will be prepared with the necessary knowledge to take the Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) certification offered by Human Resources Certificate Institute (HRCI).
We project there will be approximately 40 students annually completing this new certificate program.
The human resources certificate program is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of foundational human resources. This program will prepare students for variety of entry-level positions in human resources including employment specialist, human resources assistant, human resources coordinator, human resources specialist, and recruiter.
This program will provide or enhance the student’s foundational knowledge in human resources required by employers.
This program was designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge to obtain such professional certification. This program can also help individuals with experience to prepare for the higher-level professional certification, PHR.
Students who complete the Human Resources Certificate of Achievement will be able to:
1. Understand all aspects related to the talent acquisition process.
2. Understand the techniques and methods for delivering employee training programs that align with current and future organizational goals.
3. Apply business knowledge, reflective practices, and ethical leadership skills that drive learning and self-improvement
4. Apply the elements of the total rewards package to support organizational competitiveness.
5. Understand the methods organizations use to monitor and address morale, performance, and retention.
6. Demonstrate the use of risk assessment and mitigation techniques to promote a safe, secure, and compliant workplace.
7. Understand records management, storage, and retention regulations and reporting requirements.
The goal is for students to be able to complete the certificate program in 3 semesters (S1=6 unites, S2=6 units, and S3= 9 units, OR in 4 semesters, taking 6 units for 3 semesters (Fall, Spring, Fall) and 3 units during the Summer session.
The course sequence includes three pre-existing management courses as a foundation: Human Relations, Principles of Management, and Human Resource Management. Additionally, students will be required to take Microcomputer Applications (CIS 050) as a required course.
Beyond these initial courses, students will take the 3 newly developed (and approved) courses (Employee Compensation, Compliance and Risk Management, and Human Resource Development) as part of this newly designed certificate program.
