The Signal Technician [certificate of achievement/degree]will train students to repair, test, adjust, and install electronic equipment, such as industrial controls, transmitters, and antennas. Course requirements will cover assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of automation devices as well as programmable logic controller programs, their installation and related maintenance.
· number of sections of core courses to be offered annually: 8 sections
· headcount of student annual enrollment in core courses: 144 students
· estimated completers at the end of the second year: 10 completers
· estimated completers at the end of the fifth year: 15 completers
A) The goal of this program is to provide students with valuable, hands-on skills that prepares them for a career maintaining and repairing technical equipment and associated controllers, including radio transmission equipment, for in-demand positions at mass transit agencies.
B) Upon successful completion of this (certificate or major), the student will be able to:
1. Evaluate transmission signals, transmission lines, and antennas.
2. Analyze and measure the characteristics of typical DC and AC circuits.
3. Apply multimeter and oscilloscope measurement techniques to solid state circuits.
4. Build an electronic device using a schematic and device specifications.
5. Install and test the operation of a ladder logic Program for a PLC.
6. Design and program Lab VIEW virtual instruments.
This certificate and degree will help meet the need of major transit agencies, including SMART Train and Golden Gate Transit, to train employees to service and repair equipment, motors/engines,and carriages. This certificate and degree were developed because of a regional project request with SMART Train and through the Strong Workforce Program.
