The Building Construction Technology Program provides a general background in building construction and a working knowledge of the techniques and materials used in the construction industry. This program is designed for the student who is interested in a construction inspection or construction management career. Program planning should occur with the assistance of a department member.
The goal of this award is to emphasize the need for the student to achieve a level of critical thinking, communication and information and technological literacy skills. These skills are required in the workforce and in preparing for transfer to colleges and universities.

The program is designed for students seeking employment in the building construction industry and for students wishing to transfer to university programs in building construction technology.
The Building Construction program, with its AS & CA, is a longstanding program at San Diego Mesa College. The proposed revision reflects changes from BLDC 060 & 061 to BLDC 062 & 063 with respective decrease from 28 to 27 units.

San Diego Mesa College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program or a program modification because 1) a supply gap exists for these occupations; 2) their entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage; and 3) a high number of annual openings exist. The region’s community colleges should note, however, that employers typically require a minimum educational attainment of a bachelor’s degree for Construction Inspection Occupations, except “Construction and Building Inspectors.”
