Program Description
(NOTE: This Description and Learning Outcomes were passed 2/7/18 by Curriculum Committee with stipulations. Department Chair Denah Johnston will be working on some minor changes in the next week. Please feel free to reach out for the most updated version of this information for full consideration.)
This certificate prepares students in the planning and the business of the production of motion pictures. The certificate is inter-disciplinary and includes instruction in Cinema production, pre-production and basic business offerings. The curriculum examines the narrative and provides real world skills such as evaluating cost, budgeting and marketing in order to complete a film. Students who complete this certificate are prepared for entry level positions in a producer's office in positions such as Assistant Production Office Coordinator, Travel Coordinator, or Transportation Dispatcher.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
1. Apply motion picture and video production management and decision making skills.
2. Analyze data to make responsible business decisions.
3. Use motion picture and video terms and concepts when communicating with client and crew.
4. Propose solutions to ethical and social conflicts in a multi-cultural, team-oriented, rapidly changing environment.
5. Employ professionalism and understanding of workforce protocol in collaboration, communication and behavior.
The minimum time for completion of this certificate is 2 semesters. Completion time will vary based on student preparation and number of units or classes completed per semester.
Enrollment Completer Projections
Each semester our CINE 30 Producing class enrollment fluctuates between 25-30 students. While this class is required for completion of our AS Degree, it is at the heart of this Certificate. Since this is Cinema's first certificate there is no existing data to share. However, based on labor market data there is a significant gap that can be addressed by the offering of a program that can be completed in 2 semesters to support increased hourly wage and essential skills that are immediately applicable in the local work force.
Statistically, CCSF's Cinema department sees the majority of students engaging in CTE training in related Film TOP codes with nearly 150 more students in the last reported year than runner-up DeAnza (which is competition but geographically quite a distance from anyone based in or closer to San Francisco).
Existing information on completers CCSF's Cinema program (AS Cinema Production) provides a pathway to CTE work in the field as well as training and skill development for working professionals but remains more of a full time commitment for students requiring 38-39 credits to complete. This Certificate will offer an alternative and/or stepping stone for students who want to return to or advance more quickly in the CTE workforce.
