Given the number of past enrollments, we project 15 completers a year.
We are proposing a Certificate of Illustration because of its broad applications in the career technical world: Illustrators traditionally have worked in the publication and editorial industry, but today illustrators can find jobs in the Gaming and Animation industry, in the Design world, and in all fields of Product Design.
Beside Mission College and Fullerton College, both over 50 miles away without direct public transportation, no CC offers this degree. Taking our location in Hollywood into consideration , the Certificate of Achievement in Illustration fills demand within the entertainment industry.
By completing this degree our students will have fulfilled most of the prerequisites for the AA and ADT in Art, Graphic Design and Certificate of Graphic Arts Communications and Animation. Since all these degrees share the same introductory courses, the proposed Certificate in Illustration makes sense from an efficiency standpoint. Students can easily stack degrees, and complete 3-4 degrees within a compressed timeline. All courses for this Certificate are already in place, and are also part of the general AA and AA-T in studio art, AA and Certificate of Achievement in Graphic Arts Communication, and Animation. Furthermore all courses are transferable, which allows students to add an AA in Studio Art, Animation or Graphic Design to the degree with General Ed requirements.
The degree can be completed within 2 years, assuming students are enrolling only in Spring and Fall.
The proposed program supports the college mission to prepare students for careers in technical education. The program has a clear sequence of courses that leads to intended outcomes and as such is appropriate to the objectives and conditions of higher education and community college education in California. The program was first discussed in advisory board meetings in 2018. We are having a follow up advisory board meeting in December. There are no requirements for additional facilities and equipment
For the reasons cited below from COE: Labor Market Research in response for Market Data on Illustration, this degree fits into the college, and state masterplan for CTE related community college education.
