This certificate of achievement prepares students for entry-level work in the music industry, or for further study through the study of composing and producing electronic music. Students will learn aspects of production, composition, synthesis, sampling, effects processing, and workflow within a digital audio workstation (DAW), as well as the tools and techniques needed to create contemporary electronic music in a variety of styles.

Purpose and Goals and Specific Objectives of Degree/CertificateThe goal of the program is to teach students to use computers and synthesizers to compose, orchestrate, and arrange music, as well as apply elements of music theory to create musical and tonal structures, including harmonies and melodies. In addition, students will learn to confer with producers and directors to define the nature and placement of film, television music, and video games.
Background and Rationale
Los Angeles is a leading city for creatives. The city is home to some the industry’s earliest and best-known record labels, including Capitol Records, A&M Records, and Warner Bros. Records. The area is blanketed with myriad venues and performance spaces, as well as entertainment and theme parks, including Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Universal Studios.
In Hollywood’s film studios, there is a holistic and endless need for those trained in various arts, including music and technology. A wide array of artists and technicians—including film scorers, songwriters, sound designers, sound engineers, studio musicians, and performers—are responsible for making the film industry work. Online streaming companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and the newly established Disney Plus, are creating content at an enormous rate. There are many jobs in this facet of the industry alone.
Video Game industry will earn a projected 150 Billion in worldwide sales in 2019. Many of these companies are also located in Los Angeles, including, Playstation, Riot Games, Activision Blizzard, and Electronic Arts. This unique industry has a need for many music and sound creators, designers, and engineers.
Place of Program in Curriculum/Similar Programs at Rio HondoThe Music and Integrated Technology program will work in tandem with the current Music Department course offerings but will focus on Music Technology and create CTE/vocational and CSU transfer opportunities for our students.
