Approximately 120 students are enrolled in the Fire Technology Program overall. Of those, it is expected 60 students will apply for an AS Degree each year.
The goal of the Columbia College Fire Technology Program is to keep the program moving in a progressive manner to be a one of the best training facilities for a rural junior college. The fire service is highly competitive and in order to promote within a fire department an AS Degree is the minimum education required to become a company officer. The AS Degree provides students with the ability to transfer to a variety of different online higher education opportunities.
Upon satisfactory completion of this award, the student should be prepared to:
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills in compliance with state fire training requirements for Firefighter I and applicable certifications.
• Operate emergency and non-emergency vehicles in compliance with state fire training requirements.
• Demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) according to industry standards.
• Utilize knowledge and skills to maintain health and fitness levels necessary for industry standards and/or job-specific duties.
