The CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) Certificate will provide the student with an opportunity for future employment as a classroom captionist shadowing a hearing-impaired individual, providing a realtime translation of all proceedings. The training program provides for an internship experience, where student will learn first-hand the job duties of a CART reporter. To earn a certificate, complete the required courses as listed with a grade of C or better. At least 50 percent of all course work must be completed at Cypress College. Students must furnish their own machine and paper. This certificate requires a total of 25.5 units.

The program goal is to train the student to develop the necessary skills to work with a hearing-impaired individual providing realtime translation and feedback in seminars, classrooms, meetings, and large-scale venues. The certificate will forcus on speed and accuracy.

Students will learn a variety of writing skills in legal, literary, and medical terminology along with the development of advanced vocabulary with keyboard applications.
