The Certificate of Achievement in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training is designed for Kinesiology students who would like to pursue a career in a variety of sports medicine professions including but not limited to athletic training, physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy and coaching. Sports Medicine is a multidisciplinary educational experience and our program emphasizes lecture courses along with hands on clinical experience in our athletic training facility. This program will give students a foundation of knowledge they will need to be successful as they transfer to a four-year institution to obtain a Bachelors Degree or as they join the workforce for entry level jobs such as a Physical Therapy Aide. The primary areas of focus for this certificate will be the human body and how it functions as well as injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
Student Learning Outcomes include:
Our Sports Medicine/Athletic Training program is projected to have an enrollment of 25-35 students/year with 10-15 completing the certificate annually.
Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a sports medicine/athletic training profession and/or educational plan. The information we provide to our students can be used in a variety of professions; including coaching, athletic training, chiropractic care, physical therapy, personal training or many other allied healthcare professions. It is essential for students who are focused in a career under the sports medicine umbrella to have basic understanding of the human body and how it functions, as well as evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Through our courses students will be exposed to educational content as well as skill building. With this certificate students will have more opportunities in the work force in entry level positions such as physical therapy aide and personal training. The education they receive will also set them up to be successful as they transfer to a four-year institution to meet the requirements of their educational and professional goals.
Course Objectives:
The Certificate of Achievement can be completed along with the Cabrillo College Kinesiology AA-T, or as a stand alone certificate. The majority of professions under the Sports Medicine umbrella will require a minimum of a Bachelors Degree. However completion of this certificate will assist students in obtaining employment as a Physical Therapy Aide, Personal Trainer or other entry level allied health jobs.
