The Makeup curriculum consists of a minimum of, but not limited to, 275 hours of instruction and requires a 2.0 average or higher in each Makeup course to earn 19.5 units of college credit and a Certificate of Completion in Makeup. It prepares the student to qualify for the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology examination and the workforce. Upon passing the state examination, the student will be issued a Makeup license by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
Riverside City College projects 150 students to earn a certificate or degree in makeup.
The makeup program prepares individuals for makeup artist occupations through the instruction and care of the skin, including hygiene, customer relations, and salon management. In 2018, there were 3,500 jobs in the makeup/esthetics occupational group in the inland Empire/Desert Region. This occupational group is projected to increase employment by 11% by 2023. Employers in the region will need to hire 2,447 workers over the next five years to fill new jobs and back fill jobs that workers are permanently vacating (including occupational transfers and retirements).
